Assistant Teacher (Preschool)

Position Description:
  •  At the Y, we believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for quality of life and future success. That’s why our child care, after school and Child Watch programs are staffed with people who understand the cognitive, physical and social development of kids, the need children have to feel connected and supported in trying new things and the caring and reinforcement parents and families need to help each other. At the Y, babies develop trust and security, preschoolers experience early literacy and learn about their world and school-age kids make friends, learn new skills and do their homework. Most importantly, children learn how to be their best selves.
  • POSITION SUMMARY: Provides a safe, caring and learning environment for infants, toddlers, and/or preschoolers by performing the following duties.
  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include the following, other duties may be assigned: 1. Thinks, communicates and behaves as a cause-driven leader and role model for other staff and members when it comes to desired staff behaviors; promotes youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility in all job-related functions. 2. Assists the lead teacher in supervising and implementing the curriculum including leading activities and assisting with planning and assessments. 3. Establishes relationships with families, staff and host. Greets each child and parent daily; communicates often and professionally with families, staff and children. 4. Maintains program environment and equipment, assists with cleaning. 5. Observes children to help guide curriculum and assessments 6. Offers children appropriate affection, verbal praise, and acceptance while providing clear and consistent expectations for behavior; sets firm limits with positive phrasing and actions when necessary. 7. Assists in ensuring program’s compliance with all YMCA, HEPA, SUTQ, ODJFS licensing and NAEYC requirements. 8. Assists with establishing and monitoring individual child goals. 9. Maintains prompt hours and follows procedures for absences. 10. If applicable, complete duties as required by the Child and Adult Care Food program. 11. Establishes, maintains, and provides documents needed for OPDN registry and profile. 12. Attends all staff meetings, child care workshops, specialized trainings and safety trainings. 13. Attends applicable special events.
  • QUALIFICATIONS: -High school diploma or general education degree (GED); must be at least 18 years of age. -Career Pathway Level as determined by Program’s SUTQ requirements. -Must submit medical statement as required by ODJFS standards. Must obtain and keep current training certifications in first aid, communicable diseases, child abuse recognition & prevention required by ODJFS. -Passionate belief in the Y’s cause of nurturing the potential of all youth, supporting healthy living for all people and finding ways to help and support our neighbors. -Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community. -Proven track record of developing authentic relationships with others. -Ability to foster a collaborative team approach to solving challenging situations. -YMCA Global Leadership Certification: if not certified, must obtain certification within 12 months.
Position Qualifications:

  • Experience working with Toddlers & Preschoolers
  • Children with special needs and/or CDA, AA or BS
Rate of Pay:

  • $12-$17/ depending on post HS education
