Professional Development and Your Business

Here is information for you - the Professional Child Care provider. It is intended for you to use to improve the quality of your child care business. We trust you will find it helpful.

The Marketing Edge
Now that you are up and running as a Family Child Care provider, it is important to maintain that professional edge: the edge that keeps parents satisfied.

Helpful websites such as the following will keep you in tune with the latest trends for your business:
     www.redleafinstitute.org
     www.redleafpress.org
     www.irs.gov
www.cpsc.gov - The Consumer Products Safety Commission

You also become more marketable when you are recognized for going above and beyond the minimums. Having a degree, four year or associates, speaks to your customers. Being accredited is also a plus. Accreditation says that you have taken extra steps to improve the overall quality of your program. Some continuous learning opportunities can be found at the Home Provider Map or in our Career Paths section of our web site.

Increasing Your Professionalism
Maintaining your edge also means setting our program apart. How do you do that? You offer a quality service. To be a quality provider means that you have the knowledge necessary to offer a program that addresses the needs of the children you care for. To know how to best meet these needs, you must be adequately trained.

Action for Children can help. We sponsor a variety of classes to serve the needs of home providers. These workshops are led by early childhood experts with experience in working with young children and with leading adults in their own learning and development. Access our current workshops calendar.

There are numerous other opportunities in our community for professional development. Conferences also offer professional development opportunities. Ohio’s early childhood educators can attend conferences sponsored by organizations that include:
OAEYC (The Ohio Association for the Education of Young Children: www.oaeyc.org)
CAEYC (The Columbus Association for the Education of Young Children - no web site)
ODE (The Ohio Department of Education, Early Childhood: www.ode.state.oh.us)

A number of other organizations offer workshops for early childhood professionals in central Ohio, including Children’s Hospital, the Central Ohio Special Education Regional Resource Center (COSERRC), The American Red Cross, and The Ohio State University Extension.
