Out-of-school time care should be different from school and different from a child care program for younger children. Look for these features in a quality out of school time program:
- Children get a chance to make choices about their activities. They’re allowed as much independence as they are ready for.
- Children are offered a quiet place to relax, be alone and rest. There is soft furniture that kids can curl up in, and good lighting so they can read.
- Children are offered a chance to run, shout, jump and let off steam in a safe place that is well supervised at all times.
- You, or the program, should provider nutritious snacks for the children after school. It’s a long time between lunch and dinner.
- There are varied activities for children, with enough art, craft and reading materials to keep children interested. Activities are adapted to suit children of different ages.
- Parents are involved in the program. They are encouraged to drop in at any time, and there are opportunities for parents to help with the program.
- Remember to ask your child to help you evaluate their out-of-school time care. Talk with your child about the program and each day’s activities.
- Be positive about your choice. Children will sense your concerns and worries.
