Empowering Parents, Empowering Kids

The Art of Positive Parenting program (TAPP Today) focuses on helping parents create a healthy, mutually respectful family environment.  Founded in 1978, TAPP Today has helped tens of thousands of parents learn how to use positive communication skills with their children, resulting in a strong foundation for building children’s self esteem and parent-child relationships that grow stronger through the years.  Children with high self esteem do better in all facets of life.  Families who practice positive communication skills find greater enjoyment and more successful ways of navigating the difficult times.  It’s never too late to learn more about The Art of Positive Parenting.

The Art of Positive Parenting Skills

The TAPP program was created almost thirty years ago by Mickey Tobin, a local parent educator, and was based on many of the philosophies of parenting experts.  The combination of the teachings of these experts into the TAPP curriculum means that parents are learning the skills that are helpful in all phases of raising children.  These skills can be adapted to all situations that arise, so that the job of parenting becomes The Art of Positive Parenting.

The TAPP program address major skill areas that empower families. Positive communication skills focus on ways in which the channels of communication between parent and child are established and maintained.  Encouragement builds a child’s self-esteem and teaches the child that healthy behaviors result in positive attention from his parents.  The ability to express feelings through words rather than actions helps a child learn acceptable ways to direct her excitement or frustration.  Avoiding roadblocks in communication allows a child to feel “listened to,” and also creates an environment where your daughter or son will want to talk with you about their fears, joys and challenges as they are growing.

Conflict resolution skills involve effective forms of discipline and problem solving, and rely heavily on the use of positive communication skills.  Discipline is a way of establishing limits, creating the supporting choices and consequences, and allowing the child to choose his or her actions and accept the consequences.  Discipline is a teaching approach to helping your child understand the need for rules and learn to make good choices—especially when you are not there to guide him. Problem solving skills are another extremely effective way of resolving conflict in a respectful way.  Parent and child work together to figure out the best way to meet everyone’s needs with each person feeling that they helped define the solution.  Problem solving skills can be used with children as early three or four years old and are vital to conflict management in your child’s teenage years.

Stress is frequently at the root of challenges in family life:  too many things to do, too little time, financial issues, and job pressures are all factors in family relationships.  And stress is just as real to children as it is to adults.  Learning how to recognize stress factors for you and your child, and effective ways to manage stress and help your child learn how to deal with it will allow you to minimize the effects of external factors on your family's health.
