“Children are wonderful, messy little scientists who come to us, eyes lit bright with wonder, all their senses open and their motors running. Children need a laboratory that encourages hands-on learning, exploration and discovery, alongside caring and sensitive adults.” - Great Places for Childhood by Jim Greenman
Each child learns at his or her own unique pace. Children need places where they can:
- Move and be still
- Be alone and together
- Be noisy and quiet
- Spread out over space and time
- Connect to the real world and life of the environment where they live or where they are in care, including cooking, garbage duties, laundry
- Have access to lots of loose parts (the raw materials of discovery) and storage for the loose parts
As they learn, children use their senses and develop their own unique learning styles. Each area of their development – physical, intellectual and social/emotional is interrelated. Development in one area influences and is influenced by development in other areas.
